RIP George Floyd and Solidarity with Those Fighting Back

It’s been a historic and heavy two weeks in the US, following the murder of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis Police Department. Calls for justice have grown from a mid-sized protest outside a precinct to a nation-wide uprising, leading Donald Trump to run to his bunker and threaten to call in the army. We will be continuing to follow events as they develop, but thought we’d send out a quick email with our latest vids, and some resources for navigating threats from repression, misinformation and political division.

Uprisings the week after George Floyd

Fighting together

Whenever there are social uprisings there are attempts by those in power to spread mistrust and discord among the people fighting back. To preserve our collective power we must learn to fight together.

What is Gender?

Gender is one of the most fundamental stories humans have created.

It is a story about each one of us that begins being told even before we are born. It intersects with other aspects of our personal experience and social position to shape the opportunities we will have and the abuses we will suffer.

Gender is a means for society to categorize people along a masculine and feminine binary – categories which leave no space for the complexities and nuances in each one of us.

For anarchists the disruption and reformation of gender is intimately connected to our struggles against illegitimate power.

The fight to reclaim the telling of your own gender story will be a struggle that may last your entire life. Don’t do it alone.

May Day 2020

This May Day finds us at an important historic crossroads. Amidst a global pandemic, this year the streets will be eerily silent as people forgo the marches, rallies and riots that are the annual rituals of international workers day. But while the streets may be calm, the class war rages on. Wildcat strikes are popping off among ‘essential workers’ who two months ago were seen as some of the lowest, most precarious participants of the gig economy. Prison uprisings are breaking out around the world at an unprecedented rate. And millions of tenants are withholding their rent in what could become the first global rent strike in history.

These are interesting times. Stay safe. Get organized. Fight hard. Happy May Day.

Organize: For Autonomy and Mutual Aid

These are dark days. As the COVID-19 crisis turns our world upside-down, the social isolation and atomization of capitalism has given way to full-blown social distancing. At a time when we most need to come together, we’re told that human contact can kill us. Alarm bells are flashing everywhere as the dead pile up, the economy burns, and more and more people’s mental health deteriorates. This is the most severe and far-reaching global crisis that most of us who are alive today have ever experienced. Its a terrifying, alienated, and stressful time. It’s also no time to give up. No time to turn on Netflix, bury our heads in the sand, and wait for things to pass. Certainly not for anarchists, or anyone who calls themselves a revolutionary.

In the midst of the current pandemic, it’s easy to forget that 2019 was a year of global uprisings on a scale not seen since 1968. The system is dying. Today we stand at the precipice of a massive restructuring of the global order. There will be no going back to the way things were. We can either fight for a future that we want to live in, or we can sit by and let the banks and the tech companies pick it for us. It’s important that we take the necessary steps to keep each other safe during this crisis. Of course. But it’s also important that we take the necessary steps to keep each other safe from what comes after. And that means getting organized.

Note: The interviews for this episode were filmed back in January, before the COVID-19 crisis. Some parts are in Spanish, so if No Hablas español, make sure you remember to turn on the subtitles by clicking ‘CC’.
